Checking out the Drivable Lake Louise, Alaska Roads

We saw a couple of snowshoe rabbits in front of the RV this morning, and this one was kind enough to pose.

There were boats out on the lake as we got ready to take a drive around the area.

Down by the lake, there is an interpretive sign about Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower coming here to fish for 1 day and ending up staying for 4 as he found it so relaxing.  This happened a few years before he became President.

This is one of about 5 islands in the lake.  There are also several cabins around the lake that are accessed by snowmobile, float plane, or boat.

Milepost 2011 indicates that the road ends at the Lake Louise rest area, but we crossed a small stream and continued about 3 miles to another stream crossing.  This was the end of the road for us as the other side is privately owned property.

Construction is going on building the Lake Louise Airport which is 3300 feet long.

There are several lodges in the area to accommodate fisherman in the summer and snowmobilers in the winter.  The next 2 photos are of Lake Louise Lodge.  The first photo is of the same view in Milepost 2011 on page 339.

And this photo shows the front of the main lodge building.

The Point Lodge can be seen from our campground.

We stopped for a pop at the Wolverine Lodge and asked questions about the area, then continued on our way.

This snow groomer was parked at an area business.

And this airboat was parked in the same lot.

Just who is the Left Shoe Gang?

We found out that I have 2 more lakes in Alaska.

After resting a short while, we went for a walk along the beach.  Here’s a photo of 3 of the islands.

And there are several cabins along the shore.

At one point on the beach, we found this sign.  Actually, it’s 2 signs; one is facing the lake and the other is facing shore.

It made us wonder what lies beneath the surface of this beautiful lake.

Well folks…that concludes our tour for today.  Thanks for joining us!

A Slow Day in Dawson City

Our planned trip on Sunday up the Dempster Highway is going to be a long day, so we decided to just hang out at the RV today.  We did some catch up work in the RV and some relaxing.  After watching the NASCAR race, we decided to go for a drive into town and up to Midnight Dome.  In town, we found the “drydock” location for the Klondike Spirit which is a paddle wheeler style that cruises the Yukon River during the tourist season.

We drove by the cabins of world famous writers.  The first one was the home of Robert Service.

And next was the cabin of Jack London.

This high cache for food storage is also on the property of Jack London’s cabin.

Tourists and locals in the area drive to the top of Midnight Dome to celebrate the midnight sun and a fantastic view of the Klondike.

Here’s a view of our campground from the Dome.  Our motorhome is just a small white speck to the right of a power pole and backed up to the highway above the lower large blue building.

This is just a small portion of Dawson City as seen from the top.

And here is a spectacular view of the Yukon River.

And that’s the end of another great day of our Alaska adventure.

6/14 - 6/16/09 - Tok, Alaska

After the continued bumpy, dusty roads to Tok, we found a campground for a couple of nights. Before settling into the site, we spent quite a bit of time getting a few layers of dirt washed off the RV. The first night there, we enjoyed a sourdough bread bowl of reindeer chili. It was very good, but just not quite enough.

6/12 - 6/13/09 - Chicken, AK and Eagle, AK

This photo was taken inside the Chicken Bar where we stopped for a beer. This couple drove over that day from Dawson City (he's the city manager there) to attend Chicken Stalk which is an annual event in Chicken.

And no bar is complete without a smiling bartender.

We took a day trip to visit the town of Eagle, Alaska. The next couple of photos are of the historic Fort Egbert. When we were looking at the buildings from outside, some folks from town came over with the keys to the buildings and took us on a non-scheduled tour.

These old boat motors were inside one of the buildings and we just had to post this for our friend, Terry, who collects antique motors.

Early in May, Eagle was devastated by the worst flooding of the Yukon River in history. I believe there was somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 homes and buildings that were totally destroyed. The first picture is of Front Street where businesses were destroyed.

There were buildings on their sides.

Several vehicles were also severely damaged in the flood.

6/3/09 - Teslin, YT to Skagway, AK

On 6/3/09 we drove from Teslin, YT to Skagway, AK. The following photo is our first caribou sighting. We weren't quick enough with the camera to catch the wolf that had been stalking them. It quickly ran off as the RV approached. And here is the "Welcome to Alaska" sign as we drive down the hill toward Skagway.

This next photo is a view from our RV site in Pullen Creek RV Park. We were parked on pavement with 30amp electric and water, but had this excellent view of the harbor.

Spokane, Wa - Elks Lodge

It's May 23rd and this was the day we planned to leave Spokane and start our Alaska trip. Unfortunately, Ken's Mom fell last week and ended up in the emergency room with fractures in her upper arm. In the process, we had to move her to an assisted living facility. Needless to say, it's been a very busy week for us. She is now settled in to her new home and seems to be doing well. She will be well cared for by family and the facility. We now plan to be on the road early Monday morning.
