Another Week in Cheyenne

I don’t really have much to report for the last week although we seem to have kept ourselves busy somehow.  Last Friday, I took Bailie into the driver’s licensing office to get her license.  We had a long wait, but she was successful!

Saturday, Butch and family packed up their recycling items and took them in that afternoon.

Ken, Bailie, Butch, and Eric behind Butch.

1

Eric even has his own hardhat for working with his dad.

2

On Monday, Ken made a return visit to Skip’s office for his second series of synthetic rooster comb injections to his knees.

We drove the RV to Jolley Rogers RV on the east side of town Wednesday to get the slide awning replaced that had been damaged during the storm in Colby, KS.

In this photo, the old slide topper has been removed.

3

And here, they’re inserting the new slide awning.

4

The remaining photos are of a truck and trailer that were being stored at Jolley Rogers.

It’s Martini Time

That’s it until the next update!

6/20/2013–Synthetic Rooster Comb Knee Injection and a Chicken

Our Thursday started with a trip to the doctor to have Ken’s knees injected with a synthetic rooster comb.

All smiles before the shot.

1

An x-ray of the knee.

2

Skip, the doctor, is a longtime friend of Ken’s son Butch.

First one knee.

3

And then the other knee.

4

The injections are given in a series of three usually one week apart and Ken will be going back the next two Mondays to finish them.

After leaving the doctor’s office, we headed south through yet another construction zone to Wellington, Colorado where we stopped for lunch before picking up some lotto tickets.  Lotto tickets are not sold in Wyoming, and the trip today was much longer than we remembered, so we probably won’t be doing that again while here.

5

On our return to Cheyenne, I got a non-blurry photo of a welcome to Wyoming sign.

6

We passed the Terry Bison Ranch and got a photo of their camels.  The bison were in more distant corrals.

7

We stopped at the new Southeastern Wyoming Visitor’s Center to pick up some maps and look around.  They have some very nice displays there including this mastodon.

8

9

Back in Cheyenne, we stopped at Jolley Rogers RV and made arrangements to bring the RV in next Wednesday to have the slide topper awning replaced.  It was getting old anyway and the storm in Colby, KS the other night didn’t help it any.

From there we headed back to Butch’s house and passed this chicken on the hillside.  From what Butch told us, the guy there makes these chickens and apparently sells quite a few.  The day before, there was down lower in the field next to a for sale sign, but it was gone now.

10

Friday we will be taking our granddaughter to get her driver’s license.

6/20/2013–Cheyenne, Wyoming

Other than a few errands around town today, the main goal was to get the 50amp electric hooked up to the RV.  Ken and Butch wired it to a location on the side of the house near where we parked the RV.  Temperatures today were in the high 80’s so it was going to be nice not having to run the generator tonight.

1

For the times we’ve had to use the generator this parking spot has worked out very well.  The sun seems to be right on top of it all day keeping the batteries charged.

2

After dinner I went for a drive with Peggy and when I got back, we spent a quiet evening in the RV (enjoying 50a service).

6/18/2013–Sidney, NE to Cheyenne, WY

Our drive from Sidney, NE to Cheyenne, WY on Tuesday was a short one of just a little over 100 miles.  Several of my photos blurred today.

We passed a howling coyote on a nearby hillside.

1

And again, we drove through several areas of road construction.

2

And wouldn’t you know it…my welcome to Wyoming sign turned out very blurry!

3

The Union Pacific railroad follows the same route as I-80.

4

And we saw a couple of more NASCAR trucks along the way.

5

6

We made a stop at the Pilot to fill our fuel tank at $3.589 per gallon and then continued to our son’s house.  Since they are in a different house since our last visit, we waited until he could get home to set up and he went back to work.  Our granddaughter joined us for a trip to Arby’s for lunch and then to Lowe’s so Ken could pick up the supplies needed to give us a 50amp electric hookup while here.  We also made a stop a a local orthopedic doctor’s office and Ken is now scheduled for 3 injections of synthetic rooster’s comb into his knees over the next two weeks.  So, that means we will be staying here until after the 4th of July.

Back at the house, Ken worked on the electrical, but decided to finish it on Wednesday.  After a meal of hamburgers, we returned to the RV to relax for the evening.  We’re still adjusting to the change in time zone as well as the higher elevation.

6/17/2013–Colby, KS to Sidney, NE

We drove north out of Colby, KS on Hwy 25 today and as usual, we saw some interesting sites along the way.

For a while, we followed an earth mover.

1

2

We left Kansas behind and entered Nebraska.

3

We passed by feedlots.

4

And once we got on I-80 headed west, we went through several construction zones.

5

NASCAR vehicles are on the road west to Sonoma for next weekend’s races.

6

7

We arrived at our campground for the night in Sidney, NE at Cabela’s.  After a trip to the local visitor’s center to pick up some maps and a trip to Walmart to get a few items, we walked around the Cabela’s store for a while.  This is the very first Cabela’s that we had ever been in many years ago, and today based on the many other stores we have seen, this one seems so small now.

8

9

There have been concerns of storms approaching this area, so Ken has kept an eye on the weather radar and fortunately, they seem to be dying out although we may get some rain.  Tomorrow we just have 100 miles or so to go to our son’s house in Cheyenne, WY for a visit.

6/16/2013–Anthony, KS to Colby, KS

We left Anthony Lake on Sunday morning going north for a short distance, then taking a road to the west through Attica and then Sharon, KS.  I wasn’t quick enough with the camera, but as we approached Sharon, I spotted a sign that said it was the home of Martina McBride.

We made a short stop off the road in Kiowa City, KS by this interesting sign for Hotel Lothman.  There was even a sheriff parked there when we pulled in, but he left soon after that.

1

We crossed an intersection in Mullinville, KS where there was a sign forest for about a quarter mile or so.  Apparently the owner of the property had a statement to make.

2

We eventually landed in Colby, KS for the night where we stayed at the Thomas County Fairgrounds.  It was all back-in sites, but the let us stay hooked up and parked alongside several.  There were only two other RV’s there for the night.

3

The weather radio warned us of an approaching storm.

4

We had a lot of heavy rain and winds, but the worst of it split and went north and south of us thankfully.

5

Other than the storm, we spent a quiet relaxing evening in the RV.

6/13–6/15/2013–Anthony, Kansas

We left the campground at Chickasha, OK on the morning of 6/13 headed to our destination of Anthony, Kansas.

We hope not to ever do business with JoeBob.

1

This was one of many murals we saw painted on the sides of buildings in route.

2

We drove through El Reno, OK where a tornado on gone through about a week after the Moore, OK tornado.  We noticed a lot of roof damage as well as piles of roofing and other materials along the sides of the highway.

3

4

5

This statue was on a corner in the town of Kingfisher, OK.  As we entered the city limits, I saw a sign indicating it was the birthplace of Sam Walton, founder of Walmart.

6

Once we crossed the Kansas border, it was just a few short miles to our destination of Anthony.

7

I took this photo of our site once we got hooked up and ready to leave in the morning.  It’s at a very large city park on Anthony Lake.

8

This area has been hit hard by the drought and this is what’s left of Anthony Lake.  The houses shown are lakefront properties and although it can’t really be seen here, most of them have docks in front of their houses.  When we arrived, we talked to a man who was doing the mowing and he said the lake was pretty well dried up since last year.  That probably explains why there was only one other RVer besides us camped here during our stay.

9

The remainder of the photos were taken at the Anthony Museum which we toured this morning.  One of the volunteers there today took time to give us a personal tour and she was very knowledgeable having been working there for 27 years!  Most of their exhibits have been donated and some are on loan.  It was quite an impressive collection.

We returned to the RV for the afternoon to just relax and make some preparations for our trip tomorrow.
